How do I even start? Six months into 2020 and already so much devastation sweeping the nation. In time like these, it is difficult to think about the good things that are happening in our lives and focus solely on those that cause us to hurt.

Firstly, Coronavirus, something I never thought I would witness in my life and definitely one of the scariest times to have been in . Taking the lives of so many and causing so much heartache for families. One thing that I really have found so difficult is seeing so many people not sticking to the guidelines from the beginning, when myself and my family have been doing our part and staying indoors, trying to protect others and make this virus go away at a quicker rate. I am sure so many others will share the same views and thoughts as myself. This being said, week after week, we put rainbows in our windows and continued to clap for the NHS, all ways in which we have stayed united around the world. Although, we all wish this had never occurred, it has given us all the opportunity to appreciate and be grateful for our friends and family. Not being able to hug our loved ones or do things together, something many of us took for granted, is now something we crave and cant wait to be able to do. Hopefully, once this is all over and we get back to ‘normal’, people will still carry this with them.

Something else, which I find difficult to even think about, the horrific killing of George Flloyd which has caused riots and protesting worldwide. As a white 20 year old Female, who is very aware of my privileges, I find it hard to get my head around how some people in society can be so cruel. Derek Chauvin, the Police Officer that took George’s life, someone who’s job is to keep his people safe, yet had no problem with killing someone based on the colour of their skin, even when he made it clear that he could not breathe. It breaks my heart knowing that this is something that has been happening for years and years and yet it has taken this awful incident for the world to come as one, to do something about it and admit that this is not okay. I do need to educate myself more on the history side of things and I could never imagine how those in the black community feel, but I know that I do not and I will never condone racism. Nobody should live in fear. As someone who is going to be a qualified teacher as of next year, I have been thinking a lot about the young children I will be teaching and their future. Its scary to think that one of my children in my class, may be subjected to discrimination or racism. I have no doubt it will happen and that is heartbreaking. We must speak up for the things that are important to us, not only for us, but also for people around us. I could sit here for hours on end and express my views, but in order to make an impact, we must sign petitions, educate ourselves, be there for one another, give donations etc. One day, I hope that the the power of the public’s voices will be heard and so much more will be done for the black community. As Nelson Mandela said ” “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

With all this going on, we do not hear about the things that are positive in the world. What about pollution levels? They have decreased since we have been in lock-down and the land and sea is so much clearer than it had been. How about the fact that the second person in the world had been cured of HIV? That must give so many people hope and what a milestone! Something else I didn’t talk about earlier, the Australian Bushfires, another tragic even that had occurred. Something good about that? They are no longer on fire, no more homes and lives are being destroyed. That is something to be happy about, surely?! Not everything in this world is great, but there is so much light and so many wonderful things happening in the world, despite all the devastation. We can overcome all of these challenges in life, as long as we stay undivided.
