Tips from your Officer Team

Have you met your Officer Team yet? They're the elected leaders of SMSU, and it's their job to make sure that you're getting the most out of your student experience at St Mary's. They've come up with some tips to help you through lockdown...

Create a routine - Niamh, Education President

"One tough part of lockdown is losing your sense of a ‘normal’ day. If you create a routine where you shower, change out of your pyjamas, make your bed and stick to regular sleeping hours it really helps."

Look out for each other - Maisie, Sport President

"While there are loads of professionals who can help you out through all sorts of issues at St Mary's (you can find a list of them here), it's still really important that we look out for each other during hard times like this. If you can see that a fellow Simmie is struggling, make sure you keep in touch with them. This resource is useful to look through if you want to find resources, techniques and tips to help those around you who might be going through specific issues. There are tips to help with anxiety, eating disorders and self-harm amongst other things - while we'd always recommend speaking to Student Services about issues like these, there are situations where this might come in handy. Remember, we're all in this together."

Get outside and get moving - Maisie, Sport President

"Get out and exercise when you can! The new lockdown rules allow outdoor exercise and you can always do home workouts, so make sure you're taking advantage of this. Doing this is brilliant for your mental wellbeing, so wrap up warm and get out there. You can find some tips from Sport St Mary's on how to get active even during lockdown here."

Keep in touch - Charlie, Student Life President

"It’s easy to feel alone, but don’t forget that you can always contact other people like your family and friends through Zoom and WhatsApp if you're not with them. Just because you're in lockdown it doesn't mean that you have to lock yourself away! We're working on some schemes to try and connect students currently, so we'll let you know about those as soon as possible."

Limit news exposure - Niamh, Education President

"It’s useful to know what’s going on so that you can stay in the know and find out about whether guidelines are changing - but if the situation is bringing you down, you might want to limit how much news you watch to make sure that it's not bringing you down. There are some great 'good news' channels out there like the Good News Network which will help lift your spirits while still staying connected."

Try something new - Charlie, Student Life President

"There are loads of hobbies you can take up and new things you can learn while you're at home. If you're interested in learning a new skill or picking up a new hobby, now might just be the perfect time. There are loads of completely free tutorials on YouTube on things like drawing, fashion, music production, graphic design and loads more - now's a great time to utilise them!"

Don’t be hard on yourself - Maisie, Sport President

"You might not want to learn something new, though. If you just want to lounge around for a day and watch Netflix, give yourself permission to. You shouldn't feel bad for taking time to relax and doing whatever it is that you need to do."

Take it all one day at a time - Charlie, Student Life President

"Don’t think too far ahead. This situation is temporary, and you will get through it."
