Here are the events we're running for you this year! We'll be adding more events to the list as we get closer to when it all kicks off in September, so keep checking back here and follow us on Instagram to make sure you're first to know what's going on. You can also join our mailing list by clicking here.

Welcome Quiz

Our first Freshers' event - welcome! Play along with our quiz - it's all happening remotely through our Instagram stories, so make sure you're following there to get involved.

You'll see the questions popping up on our Instagram stories from 7pm, so watch out for them and click below to see our answer form - you'll need to fill this in to play along! We'll announce the winners afterwards...

Disco Bingo

Disco Bingo! This is round 1 of 2, so make sure you're there as you'll get a second chance to play if you love it. We know you will!

Disco Bingo is consistently described as 'the most fun I've had since lock down began' and we just know you're going to have an AMAZING time, and from the comfort of your own home. See what Secret London had to say about it here.
It's like a game of party bingo where there are prizes for lines and full house, but instead of numbers being called out you'll hear amazing songs which we'll all sing (on mute) and dance along to, so make sure you've got some space to dance.

Wear your favourite outfit, get your props at the ready and put the disco lights on. This is going to be a lot of fun!

PGCE Meet-up

PGCE students - this one's for you. We know you're super busy with placements and everything else that's going on during your course, but our Officer Team really want to meet you! That's why we're holding a group chat on Zoom so that you can get to know your student leaders. They'll be here for you all year, so why not come and say hello?

Gaming Night

Are you a pro at FIFA, a star on Rocket League, a Fortnite champion or a Warzone winner? We’re linking you up with fellow players at St Mary’s. Fill in this form to tell us what you play (all games are welcome) and we’ll introduce you to other players to play against (or with). We'll be doing this on the 6th but also throughout Freshers' - so if you can’t make it on the 6th, don’t worry. Fill in the form and we’ll still make some introductions for you!

The Big Sunday Quiz

We're running our Big Sunday Quiz on the first night of Freshers. Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part - you can play along with us in our quiz on Instagram by clicking here to follow us. You can play by yourself, as a part of a group by using Zoom to create a team or with your flat-mates. River Thames Rowing

We‘ve linked up with Richmond Boat House so you can enjoy a row boat down the Thames with friends for a great price. Jump on the 33 bus to Richmond to get there and enjoy the sights of the local area – Richmond is one of the most beautiful spots in London, and it’s home to a celebrity or two as well so keep your eyes out for stars like Joe Wicks, Tom Hardy and Mick Jagger! It’s £8 to book which is a great price – you just need to phone them on 020 8948 8270 to reserve your place.

Groups of a maximum of 4 are allowed on the boats - it's now against government COVID guidelines rules to come to events in groups of more than 6.

Black Lives Matter - a talk from Samuel Massiah

A talk on Black Lives Matter from Samuel Massiah. All students will be welcome, whether you’re a black student or an ally. To read what SMSU are doing to help the BLM movement, click here

This event is one of the first ever St Mary's values talks - keep your eye out for more of them in future. The event will be live-streamed via Zoom. For security reasons you must register on Zoom using your University email address - if you haven't started at St Mary's yet, you'll be provided with this in your first few days here.

Paddle Boarding

We’ve linked up with Active 360 Richmond to give you the chance to paddle board your way through Richmond. Paddle boarding is a perfect way to keep fit and see the local area – these sessions are guided, so don’t worry if you’ve never been on a paddle board before.

ILoveWeds Big Night In

We are teaming up with our partners at the Viper Rooms Nightclub in Kingston to bring you St Mary’s favourite night out from the comfort of your own home - I Love Wednesdays is BACK. We are hosting our Quiz which will be followed by a live DJ stream – we’re taking requests for this on Instagram the day before, so DM us by clicking here if you’ve got songs you’d like to hear - or email us at smsu@stmarys.ac.uk. You can also use our Virtual Photo Booth to show us where you’re watching from, and we’ll be giving away some prizes for the best pictures and of course for the winner of the Quiz!

We’re bringing the Freshers’ Fair online this year. We’ve got tons of companies coming along this year including Domino’s Pizza and loads more - they’ll all be giving out amazing freebies and discounts on the day! Freshers' Goes Virtual - Bongo's Bingo

Freshers Goes Virtual is a 3-hour, nationwide event like no other! There will be over 25 unis attending this one-night-only extravaganza, which will include bongo’s bingo’s largest ever live-stream, a University-style challenge for the chance to win some INSANE prizes AND An exclusive DJ set from Clean Bandit plus some very special guests!

The COVID-19 SURVIVAL Guide with Toluwa Oyelewe

TEDx speaker and Wellbeing Coach Toluwa Oyelewe has spent most of her professional career working with young people around the world, enabling them to make transformative changes in their personal and professional lives as well as in their communities. She’s coming to St Mary’s to speak you specifically on this subject. This interactive seminar will be focused on building resilience, resisting the urge to fall into a cycle of anxiousness and comparison; and getting innovative enough to make this unprecedented situation work for you.

Sing-a-long Mass-a-oke

Nothing beats freshers' week karaoke, what better way to make friends for life than by singing your favourite tunes with them at midnight? Well, we know this can't happen in person this year, but we're bringing you the best virtual version. Massaoke is where we all sing along together to some of the best songs of all time - and you're invited!

You can send in your song requests by clicking here - the list of songs you can play and email to get in touch with are on there if you fancy singing a solo! Don't worry if you change your mind, it's a low pressure, high fun event.

Don't worry if you're not a singer, there will be some other fun and games thrown in to keep you entertained! So do your vocal warm ups, make sure you've got enough space to dance and grab your hairbrushes... This is going to be a night to remember!

St Mary's Values Talks: A motivational speech from Jason Arday

Jason was a member of the Officer Team here at SMSU in 2008, and was the very person to start our historical Varsity event against Brunel! Having studied PE & Education Studies (BA) he then went on to gain an MA in Pedagogy, Professional Practice in Education (MA) and a PhD in Sociology of Education. Jason has even run 30 marathons in 35 days and raised £4.5 million for over 80 national charities including local charity shooting star chase. He's now an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Durham University working in the research area of race and education and he’s working towards becoming a Professor. He recently appeared on BBC Radio 'Moral Maze' and the Guardian.

Jason will speak to you about his journey and the hurdles he has faced along the way. You will leave this talk feeling inspired about your own journey at St Mary's.

Crazy Golf @ The Shack

The Shack in Twickenham are giving you a really good deal – you can play a round of Crazy Golf there for £5 on the night. You can also get some great drinks and food deals too - for £15 you can get a meal, 2 drinks and a round of crazy golf included! The Shack is only a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute bus ride from campus, so don't miss out.

Meet the Clubs and Societies

A selection of clubs and societies will be on campus to meet you in 'Student Square' just outside the Students’ Union building. This is a great opportunity for you to see what it is that our societies and clubs get up to, and to find out what they have achieved in previous years – they can’t wait to meet you. Yoga at Sunset

Come and join us on campus with our Yoga Instructor Louisa. She’s a brilliant professional instructor who’ll help you to unwind and relax after a busy first few weeks of student life at St Mary’s. All are welcome – whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi! This will be taking place at 5:30 to hopefully catch the last of the sun. Feel free to bring your own mat, but if you don’t have one we will happily provide you with one from our friends at Sport St. Mary’s.

CSI Grounded - Escape Rooms

A mystery, a murder, and the suspects are all 30,000 feet in the air. It’s up to you and your team mates to find out who killed one of the passengers on flight 9201… and every passenger is a suspect.
