Amy Coates

My name is Amy Coates; I am currently the social sec and fundraising officer for Ultimate Frisbee. During my time at university I have been a member of the Psychology society and Christian Union, meaning I understand the developments required for societies, to be promoted as much as sports teams. I believe I would make a good student life president as I am a confident leader, through my committee role and community based experience outside of university. I have developed a strong network with local charities, including the Salvation Army, NCS and Mind. I wish to use the skills I have acquired to continue and improve upon the current work of the SU, in order to enhance the St Mary’s student life experience. If elected I aim to:

  • Introduce regular charity events: initiate student charity coordinators to develop employable skills and leadership for members of societies by working alongside club presidents, to promote participation.
  • Ensure societies have equal opportunities as sports teams; including first aid qualifications.
  • Further develop students’ academic support, with sessions to improve the quality of any student’s work, regardless of academic ability; working alongside lecturers and the education president to create effective forums for common queries.
  • Implement a strategy for mental health in order to support all students (e.g. an online discussion group; providing the ability to speak out, whilst remaining anonymous).
  • Introduce campaign weeks to encourage healthy lifestyles, as well as raising awareness of various other life circumstances (e.g. homeless night on the rugby pitch).

  • I want to ensure fresher’s is more accessible for commuting students through accommodation services.
  • I will ensure that there is more parking available to students close to campus.
  • I will run more events throughout the year hosted by clubs and societies.
  • Continue the universities close relationship with charities by promoting their work and hosting events to raise money for said charities.
  • Continue our close relationship with local establishments such as The Viper Rooms, Kingston.
  • Work alongside my co-workers at the Student Union to ensure everyone at the universities needs are met.
  • I will try to get the library to have more accommodating hours closer to exam time.
