Rugby League is coming off of it’s most successful season having gone unbeaten in the regular season and becoming 2019/20 BUCS Premier South champions (highest level of University Rugby League). In addition to this this, the club also came 4th in the BUCS National 9s competition, cementing St Mary’s reputation as the best university for Rugby League in the south.
In the 2019/20 season we had nine players involved at League 1 and Championship level, with many of our players coming from our strong affiliation with London Broncos. This affiliation has also led our club being coached by Broncos first team captain Will Lovell. The club also has another nine players competing at regional university level, with four of these players playing in the North vs South Origin game.
As well as having a large on field presence the Spartans (our club name) put a big emphasis on off the field activities, which helps to integrate new players and solidify the close-knit culture in the club. These types of activities range from raising money for charities, such as Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), team feeds and regular socials run by our social sec’s.
This team trains twice a week with weekly strength and conditioning sessions. All of the team is welcoming to players of all abilities and all RL experiences. All of our players are happy to help out if you want any help transitioning from Union to League, and if you have never played before everyone will make sure learning the sport is as easy as possible.
