Education Zone - Friday 20 November
There was a motion brought to the meeting to lobby the University regarding online learning. Below is detail of how the motion was received and voted on at the meeting.
Motion proposed - The Students' Union should lobby the Uni to ensure that all lectures are sufficiently recorded and available; the Students' Union should lobby the Uni to provide an easy system for students to report online when they cannot access a recorded lecture/session; the Students' Union should lobby the Uni to regularly revisit and adapt its policies such as attendance monitoring and Digital Equity to make sure that they are relevant and supportive of student learning.
Your questions - Attendees highlighted that there was an issue with the differences in the technical equipment of each student which hindered their engagement in online learning and sometimes limited the capacity for discussion in sessions. Others noted that there were significant issues in supporting disabled students, those shielding and those with language barriers in adopting online learning. Some also noted that the poor quality of WiFi for those living on site was also a barrier for online learning.
Amendments added to the motion - the Students’ Union should lobby the University to ensure that when adapting programmes for online learning, all programmes explicitly consider the needs of disabled students, students learning in a second language, and students who are shielding; the Students’ Union should lobby the University to review the WiFi in student accommodation and work with the internet provider to improve the service for all students.
