Your Student Life President's Winter Update
Hi Everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful first semester, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to a well deserved rest after all of your hard work! The last few months have been super busy at SMSU.
Since my last update we have collected over 700 responses to our surveys about Student Heart Phase 2 and Simmie Safety. We have found your responses really interesting, and they will help us greatly to inform the university about student views, so thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the surveys!
The next stage of consultation has begun so we’ll be asking for your opinions on the new proposed look of the SU Lounge, Student Square and DV Games spaces! Have a look at the architect's drawings and give your views!
George and I worked together on Simmie Safety Week. In Simmie Safety Week, we hosted bike marking and talks from the local police, as well as an awareness campaign around campus, and holding focus groups with Senior Residents to find out about student experiences on campus. Simmie Safety matters all year round, so keep your eyes peeled for more events and campaigns to improve your student experience in the New Year!
One of my biggest manifesto points was to bring back RAG week for the first time since 2018, and I am so proud to say that I achieved it! We brought back Big Brother and the fundraising thermometer, as well as some new events like ‘Family Fortunes’, where some of our clubs competed against each other to be the winning family, with Ladies’ Football taking the title and a £25 bar tab! Together we have raised £4,528 so far for O2E, a charity close to my heart. I want to thank every single person who attended, participated and donated during RAG Week. An extra special thank you goes to Lacrosse, GAA, Cheer, Ladies’ Football, Women’s Rugby, Mens’ Rugby Union, Dance, and Netball for organising and participating in events, raising an incredible amount of money for this fantastic charity. Since the start of November, Asian Fusion, Chess, Creative Writing and MENA society have all affiliated with SMSU and we cannot wait to see what they get up to!
