Campaigning Tips

You’re now a candidate for the upcoming Elections, and Voting week is coming up... We’ve made a list of pointers you’ll need to keep in mind to help you along your campaigning journey!

You want people to vote for you, and to do that you need to go out and promote your manifesto – but you don’t have to do it all by yourself, you’re allowed to have your very own campaign team to help you!

Make sure you take time to decide who you want on your campaigns team, as they MUST be people you trust. Your campaigns team needs to follow the same rules and regulations that you do when campaigning, and them breaking these rules could also result in you getting a strike!

There’s no limit to how many people you can have in your campaigns team, however, once you have a confirmed list, we will need to know the names and regnum of each member.

More information on this process will be given to candidates closer to time.

You can use a variety of methods to promote your manifesto and to get students to vote for you.

We've made a list to help you:

  • Pick out a colour scheme -  having a colour scheme will help students differentiate you from other candidates.

  • Set up your social media handles -  this will help you reach the online community – please remember though that you're not allowed to post anything on your social media handles until digital week starts!

  • Posters and banners -  posters and banners are the easiest form of physical promotion to get students around campus to recognise you and vote for you – you can put your posters anywhere apart from the Chaplaincy and the Chapel, SMSU, Library, Refectory,  Waldegrave Suite and Sport St Mary's.

  • Photos and videos - photos and videos are a great way to encourage potential voters to interact with you, it allows them to know who their candidates are. You can also get creative for videos to voice your manifesto points!

  • Hold a stall in the Shannon Corridor - you can set up a table in the Shannon Corridor to approach students across campus to vote for you, and it is also a great chance for you to display your manifesto points and talk to students about them! If you’d like to book a stall, please email smsu@stmarys.ac.uk

  • Use your campaign team - your campaign team is there to help you; they can encourage people to vote for you by being in your social media posts, your posters, going around campus, and being in your videos!
