As you will be aware, the government have recently progressed their guidance surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19), and whilst there isn’t any guidance explicitly surrounding events, we’ve made a few changes to our events schedule that we think are appropriate at this time.

The Elections Results Night, scheduled to take place in the Students’ Union Lounge, will now be announced as a live screening behind closed doors. Your candidates and a very select number of their campaign teams will be present at this event, but it will not be open to all students. This step drastically reduces the size of the event whilst keeping all students informed of the results. Please tune in to @stmaryssu on Instagram at 8pm to find out who your new sabbatical officers will be.

The St Mary’s University Bar will remain open as usual until 11pm this evening.

Next week, Bus2Club will not run as usual. The Viper Rooms will be open, but buses will not be running from campus and you will need to make your own way there and back if you would like to go.

As you will be aware from communications from the University, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make sure the University is ready to teach and work remotely in case the government asks it to stop teaching in person. To test SMSU’s ability to work remotely, we will be closing the office on Monday 16th March. We will still be working and you can reach us all be email, on the phone or by social media. If you would like to collect your Varsity T-shirts, you can do this when we’re back in office on Tuesday 17 March, and you can still buy them online.

We will be continuing to assess our events programme to ensure that you are safe – as your Union, this is our priority. We’ll make an announcement regarding future events on Wednesday 18 March. In the meantime, please continue to read SIMMSpace for the latest information from the University.
