SIMMStock is changing. Here's an announcement from our VP Community Tim Rogers explaining how our events portfolio will be changing in 2017/18 - it's an exciting time for us, but we've had to make some difficult decisions to move forward and keep bringing you the best events portfolio we can.
"Dear St Mary’s students,
We hope you’ve had a great summer and that you’re looking forward to starting another enjoyable year at St Mary’s. We thought you might be interested to hear of some changes to our events programme for 2017/18.
We’ll be revealing our events programme for 2017/18 shortly, and we’re very excited to let you know about a brand new night that we’ll be running throughout the year. The TW1 Sessions are a series of evening events that will be held in the SU Bar and Lounge and will feature a wide range of activities and acts. They’re currently scheduled to run once a term, but the frequency may increase if they take off and we get enough good feedback from you about them. We’re really excited to show you what we’ve got in store for these events!
Developing our events programme has meant that we’ve had to make a difficult decision about our annual SIMMStock festival. Unfortunately SIMMStock 2017 wasn’t well attended and took up a massive proportion of our events budget. You’ve also told us at our Feedback Friday events and in surveys that holding a greater number of slightly smaller events on campus might be preferable to one big event on a Saturday, so for these reasons there won’t be a SIMMStock in 2018.
SIMMStock has been one of the most cherished events on our calendar in past years, and we’ve had some incredible days out in the sun hosting acts as diverse as Soulfish, Chris Stark, Reggae Roast, MistaJam and Dave Benson Phillips! We’ve also hosted a lot of well-loved student acts from our Dance Club to staff bands and a huge range of student singer-songwriters. We’re really proud of everything the event has achieved and hope you understand that we’re resting the festival for the right reasons.
The launch of the TW1 Sessions is a very exciting prospect that could develop into whatever our student body wants it to be if it garners enough support. So if you have any ideas about what you’d like to see happening at TW1 Sessions then we would love to hear from you. Every event is tailored specifically to the needs of St Mary’s students, and we welcome comments and feedback from all areas of the student body. Please tweet me by clicking here, email me on vpcommunity@stmarys.ac.uk, call me on 0208 240 1041 or come up to the First Floor of the Students’ Union Building to chat in person.
We can’t wait to see you for Welcome Fortnight - we’ll be announcing our programme of events for this and our headliners in the next two weeks. We’ll see you in September for SMSU’s biggest and best year ever!
Yours faithfully,
Tim Rogers
