Dear current St Mary’s students,
In recent years, we’ve been making progress for you in representation, welfare, events, clubs, societies, communications and all of our other areas of our operation. Over the summer, we started looking at how we could improve the SMSU Shop.
As you (hopefully) know, the money we make on everything we sell in the SMSU Shop is then fed back to you in everything else that we do. In recent years, the SMSU Shop has been on a decline which was something we hoped we’d be able to reverse, but we’ve now realised that this may not be possible. The figures from the Shop are something we take very seriously, since this money that could be used to improve your student experience in other areas. Because of this, at our Trustee Board on Wednesday our Officer Team and External Trustees were forced to take the difficult decision to close the SMSU Shop.
This is not a decision we take lightly. We realise how many students and student staff feel and have felt a connection to the Shop. Ultimately, though, we made this decision with you (our current students) in mind - we simply aren’t prepared to take any risks with the money that you invest in us.
One piece of good news is that St Mary’s branded clothing isn’t going away. We’re currently working on developing a web store where you’ll be able to get hoodies, T-shirts and potentially other St Mary's items. This will hopefully be up and running soon, but we can’t confirm dates yet.
We still have some stock available in store now, so until it all goes we’re having a sale - this means that everything in the Shop (other than greeting cards) will be sold at a 50% discount until it’s all gone. The Shop will officially closed when all of our stock is sold out – up until that point, opening times will be sporadic due to lack of staffing. Please check for all of the details on opening hours.
