The Story of the West London Varsity 2017

Here it is, the story of the West London Varsity 2017!

You started making your way to Brunel in your droves from 7am led by Sam Cliffe, our Vice-President Sports and Societies...

The results came flying in, with a number of strong wins for St Marys and a few upsets. Our Rowing Club fought extremely hard to take their win, which made the overall score 5-3 to #TeamStMarys by 12pm! Our rowers were 1 minute 30 seconds quicker than Brunel overall, which was a huge achievement.

The score stayed neck and neck for a long while – results from the athletics and Futsal went Brunel’s way, while two brilliant Ultimate Frisbee wins for St Mary’s evened things out.

Our Rugby League Spartans also gave a brilliant performance, beating their counterparts comfortably in a 62-8 win. By about 4.30pm, the score was 10-10 – it really couldn’t have been much closer!

During all of this, the first ever Wheelchair Basketball fixture was played. This showed a great commitment to inclusive sport from both sides. You can expect to see this continuing in the years to come!

There were incredible scenes in the Fencing fixtures which included Canadian Olympic Athlete Leo McKinnon competing for Team St Mary's – here, St Mary’s took both of the points that were on offer. The score at this point was 13-11, but a few Brunel wins took it up to 13-13.

St Mary’s Ladies’ Football Team absolutely pummelled Brunel with a 5-1 win – after many of the ladies had already played against Brunel’s Futsal Club earlier (we won this fixture 19-1). This result took the score up to 14-13…

And around an hour later, the scene was set – 16-15 to St Mary’s, with four fixtures left to play. It was up to Women’s Rugby Union, Men’s Football 1s, Men’s Basketball and Ladies' Volleyball to retain the trophy!

Unfortunately, we went down in all four fixtures within the first hour of them. But our heads didn’t go down!

The comeback of the day came from our Women’s Rugby Club, who turned around a 12-0 result to win 36-17 overall.

This meant that one more win in any of the other three fixtures would win it for St Mary’s, and it looked like it could happen St Mary’s FC trailing by just one goal...

Unfortunately, the team fought as hard as they could but it never came, and Brunel took the Volleyball and Basketball fixtures too. This meant that Brunel took home the Varsity trophy this time!

It wasn't all bad news, though! Throughout the day we had incredible support from our Senior Management Team & University…

Donna Smith, the Students’ Union CEO put it perfectly, Simmies battled hard throughout the day, and we are all immensly proud of everyone’s efforts – including (and especially) those of our fans!

After a well fought campaign from both sides, Brunel just pinched the win with the overall score 18-17. Jacob summed it up perfectly...

Here’s to next year when Varsity 2018 sees Brunel visiting the St Mary’s campus!
