Achievements in Education Presidency: A Semester of Progress and Empowerment
As the Education President this semester, I’ve had the privilege of leading and contributing to initiatives that directly impact the student experience. This term has been marked by a focus on enhancing student well-being, creating more effective academic policies, and empowering students to take an active role in their education. Below, I will outline the key initiatives I’ve been involved in, including the Simmie Safety Campaign, Smart Study Campaign, and my work on improving academic policy and student leadership structures.
1. Simmie Safety Campaign: Prioritising Well-being
One of my main priorities this semester was ensuring that student safety remains at the forefront of our collective efforts. Safety is not just about physical security but also emotional and mental well-being. Working closely with campus security, counselling services, and various student groups, I led a comprehensive Simmie Safety Campaign designed to address both immediate safety concerns and longer-term initiatives. This campaign focused on raising awareness about existing safety resources on campus, including mental health support and emergency contact systems. We also held workshops and events designed to engage students in conversations about safety. This helped ensuring that students feel heard and empowered to report safety concerns without fear of retaliation via the report and support form that allows students to anonymously report incidents on campus.
Key activities included in this campaign was sessions such as self-defence classes, first aid work shop and fire safety training. This was also the first sleep over that happened in the new space.
2. Smart Study Campaign: Building on Academic Success
In our increasingly fast-paced world, it is crucial that students develop efficient and sustainable study habits. The Smart Study Campaign, is initiative focused on enhancing academic performance through better study strategies and time management and even highlight the benefits of Artificial intelligence.
This campaign encouraged students to prioritise effective study techniques over mere cramming and were to get help if needed. We held workshops on various aspects of studying smarter, such as leveraging digital tools for organising tasks, active learning strategies, and techniques for balancing study and self-care. As part of the Smart Study Campaign, I also worked extensively on educating student on AI and how to reference right.
Two policies I have worked on this term are:
The EC (Exceptional Circumstances) Policy: I collaborated with the university administration to review and improve the EC policy, ensuring that students who celebrate different religious faith are able to have a religiously observed policy around coursework.
The Discount Policy: I have and am currently working with the university leadership to introduce more accessible discount opportunities on tuition fees. This tuition discount makes it easier for students to access university with a less financial strain.
