For the past few months I have been privileged enough to be able to serve as Student Life President. Talking with students everyday, interacting with them, and even hosting events and experiences to bring them together. I see these past months as some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my life.
However alongside all of these things, I have been able to see a side of the University that many won’t have. St Mary’s has many strengths, but more than ever I have been able to see its weaknesses. The clear gaps in our campus security, and the University’s lack of proper investment into student life outside of academics are clear indicators to me that my mission as SLP is not complete.
That’s why I will be re-running in this year’s elections, and fighting to retain my role as SLP.
David's manifesto
1. THE STUDENT PROFESSIONALS - Investing into our Societies and Clubs
Appeal to the university to end/ place an earlier end time for Wednesday lectures so more students will have the opportunity take part in competitive sports.
Personal visits to training sessions/ activities of each club and society throughout the year to directly interact with them, understand what they do and hear their needs.
Host semesterly mingling events for club and society committees to continue to encourage cross collaboration between student groups
Appeal to the University and work with the union to provide storage and working spaces for active societies.
2. THE ST MARY'S TRIBE - The Community Project Phase 2:
Work with students to create an original student emblem to unify the body.
Introduce a student mascot to act as a face of our student body.
Work with students and the union to design and introduce a St Mary’s Varsity Jacket and open the way for new types of student designed merch.
3. THE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT LIFE - Hosting more activities and experiences
Form a student committee to both plan and organise events for the student body.
Introduce “Freshers Camp” - A few days of activities as part of new students' induction into St Mary’s
Personally run regular weekend activities for on campus students.
Continue “SLP” events where students can win special themed prizes and experiences.
4. THE STUDENT SAFEGUARD - Improving the health and safety of our students
Appeal to the University to address the clear gaps in security on our campus, and create a safer environment for our students.
Appeal to the police and the council to provide a night bus service from Kingston directly to campus on Wednesday nights.
Work with senior residents and the 1850 to improve the accessibility of both sanitary and sexual health products.
Lead initiatives to help improve student life skills such as public speaking and presenting, money management, and general social confidence.
These past months working as your Student Life President have been some of the most fulfilling, and valuable of my life. I have been able to see so much of what happens in this University, both its strengths and its problems, and because of that I know that I am the most qualified to continue serving as your SLP, and help improve student life at St Mary’s for the better.
MORE PASSION.
