Shekinah Brown

(She/Her)

Hi there, I’m Shekinah and I’m a 3rd year BA Liberal Arts student at St Marys. I’m running for the NUS Delegate role.

I’m focused on improving and making a contribution to society - shaping a better world for future generations. I grew up in inner-city London and like many young Londoners, I’ve had several challenges in life. During my sixth-form college years, I studied in the East Midlands so I’ve had the privilege to experience different cultures and lifestyles. In the future, I’d love to work with and empower the youth, especially those impacted by knife crime. Last year, I had the chance to volunteer for months at a local South London food bank. Also, I’m currently the Subject Chair for the Liberal and Creative Arts department, which is undervalued in society at the moment. I have a keen interest in world affairs, and I’d like to think as an individual I can make a difference, I believe that is my purpose in life.

Shekinah's manifesto

  1. One of my objectives is to bring students together from different backgrounds (disabled students, Muslim students, non-Londoners, ethnic minorities and international students), raising issues of integration at Universities, so that students feel part of a community and recognised and acknowledged. I would collaborate with lecturers and department heads to raise these issues and discuss different approaches.

  2. Challenge departments by organising a panel event with ethnic minority and disabled students to ensure that their voices are heard.

  3. Promote outreach for professionals from these backgrounds who are now living and working in London - to attend a University event in the future, with the hope of encouraging St Mary's students.
