Commuter students who do not live on campus cannot return home for meals during breaks or lunch periods
Rising transport and living costs already place additional financial pressure on commuter students
Current refectory prices are not affordable for many students and force some to skip meals
Affordable food is essential for health, wellbeing, focus, and academic performance
Students living on campus have points to spend on food.
Introducing lower-cost hot meals and student-priced options would promote fairness and inclusion not just sandwiches
The University has a responsibility to ensure equal access to basic supports, including affordable food. If a student spend 1.20 on a croissant and 1.60 on a hot drink on break - then about £5 on a hot lunch that's almost £8 a day (£40 a week) for students who are also having to pay for travel or parking this can create a financial barrier.
Supporting commuter students encourages them to remain on campus, attend classes, and engage fully in university life.
