This year, we introduced our SU Awards to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Simmies across a range of categories.
The awards are judged by a panel, but the nominations are open to everyone. Information about each role can be found below.

The Undergraduate Course Rep of the Year award recognises an undergraduate course rep who has effectively represented students at Student/Staff forums and Big Rep Meetings, is a role model for their Faculty/Institute and SMSU and demonstrates positive attitude towards students/staff whilst showing real desire to improve students’ academic experience.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Michael Bobo.
The Postgraduate Course Rep of the Year award recognises a postgraduate course rep who has effectively represented students at Student/Staff forums and Big Rep Meetings, is a role model for their Faculty/Institute and SMSU and demonstrates positive attitude towards students/staff whilst showing real desire to improve students’ academic experience.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Naomi Owen.
The Subject Chair of the Year award recognises a Subject Chair who has gone above and beyond as the lead student representative for their Faculty/Institute, demonstrates a passion for improving students acaedmic experience and is a dedicated SMSU team member who has attended and promoted academic engagement events.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Dermot Collon.
The Campaign of the Year award recognises a campaign that saw high student engagement and involvement, positive outcomes and feedback from students and a strong purpose to change or improve the lives of students.
The winner of this award for 2023 is 'Ramadan Unity Fast.'
The Outstanding Contribution to Inclusion award recognises an individual or group who has been a committed member of SMSU and shown great passion and leadership on EDI issues.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Andy Feltham.
The Most Charitable Society of the Year award reognises a society that has led innovative fundraisers for charitable causes.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Fishing Society.
The Committee Member of the Year award recognises a committee member that:
Maintains effective administration of their society
Is a role model for the society and SMSU
Demonstrates support for other clubs/societies and SMSU
The winner of this award for 2023 is Mary Clement Mannering.
The Most Improved Society of the Year award recognises a society that has:
Increase in membership
Improvement in administration
Involvement in the wider St Mary’s Community
Improvement in reach/achievement
This winner of this award for 2023 is International society.
The Society of the Year award recognises a society that:
Demonstrates effective administration and organisation
Helps to build a positive image of SMSU/St Mary’s
Can evidence the support of other clubs/societies and/or adopts charitable fundraising
Demonstrates good behaviour and attitude in all activities
The winner of this award for 2023 is Creative Writing society.
The Outstanding Contribution to Fundraising award recognises a student or group that has gone above and beyond with regards to fundraising either as part of their club/society or just as an individual.
The winners of this award for 2023 are Tori Ludwig & Ryan Orchard.
The Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering award recognises a student or group that has a positive attitude towards volunteering either as part of their club/society or just as an individual.
The winners of this award for 2023 are Amirah Faudzi & Syafia Rozman.
The Student Leaders Award recognises an individual who has gone above and beyond during their time at St Mary's to improve the experience for their peers. Recipients need to have shown exemplary leadership skills and demonstrated that their work has benefitted fellow students, the wider community, and their future employment.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Isha Chaudhry.
The Changemaker of the Year award recognises a student or student group that is passionate about making a change on campus and beyond. They may have contributed to campaigns, student life or fundraising, volunteering or community based activity.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Shelley Carey.
The winner will have gone above and beyond in a number of roles and will be an ambassador for the work and values of the Students' Union. They will be a champion for improving the student experience on campus.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Emily Dance.
The winner will have gone above and beyond in their employment as a staff member of SMSU or St Mary's University.
The winner of this award for 2023 is Jack Hobbs.
SMSU values are empowering, informed, collaborative and inclusive. The winner of this award is chosen based on their dedication to representing these values throughout their time at St Mary's.
